Healthier Classroooms – Guest Post by Jakob Barry

When school is in session classrooms are probably the one place other than the home where children spend most of their time.
That’s why when it comes to kid’s learning skills the setting needs to uphold certain standards in order for potential to be realized. Otherwise outside factors may become burdensome compromising their development and creativity.

To make the classroom a healthier, friendlier place here are a few suggestions to help schools promote better working environments:

Contain germs: We all know kids sneeze and cough but they don’t have to do it all over each other. Even sneezing into their hands like many of us do should be discouraged because wherever hands touch germs will infiltrate. Without tissues or wipes available undoubtedly the best direction for kids to sneeze and cough is towards the crook of the arm. This will contain germs best.

Avoid toxic cleaning products: Very often industrial cleaners composed of chemicals produce what we know as that “fresh” scent but lingering fumes can cause headaches and affect breathing. Wherever possible school janitors should be encouraged to use friendlier cleaning products unless there’s a tough grout cleaning job that may need a harsher substance. In such cases proper ventilation is a must before kids assemble in a classroom.

Add plants: Studies have shown plants can cleanse certain toxins out of indoor air so adding a few to the classroom is beneficial. They will also soften the sometimes harsh feel of brick or stone walls that other decorations or props fail to do.

Capitalize on windows: Classrooms should not be in depressing rooms without windows where electricity is the only source of light. In order for learning to be inspirational and awaken the mind and imagination students need exposure to natural sunlight and if possible a refreshing breeze.

Wash air vents: Chances are every classroom uses air conditioning or heat during the year. Since filters and vents collect dirty particles they should periodically be cleaned so not to re-circulate the filth in the air.

Tidy up recycling stations: Recycling in schools is important but stations for glass, paper, and plastic often become messy and unsanitary. They should be kept orderly, which will likely encourage kids to be more eco-friendly.

Dust and prevent allergies: Aside from regular cleaning dusting in classrooms is important. It prevents respiratory infections, runny noses and itchy eyes all of which can be distractions for students and teachers.

Sterilize computer consoles: Many schools now have computers used by any number of students each day. In order to keep them germ-free keyboards and mice should be wiped down every few users. It may seem a little extreme but when the common cold starts up and students begin getting sick the more everyone does to prevent germs from spreading the happier everyone will be. This can easily be done with cotton balls & rubbing alcohol placed nearby for easy access.

Encourage healthy snacks: What our kids eat affects their concentration. One way to encourage better eating habits is to have parents team up in an effort to provide healthy alternatives to all those non-nutritional snacks.

Provide enough space: There are many factors that affect learning but just like in an office environment where cramped quarters has negative results the same is true of classrooms. Make sure kids don’t feel restricted, chairs are reasonably comfortable, and there’s ample legroom. Taking this and all of the above into consideration will hopefully boost a child’s ability to stay focused on the daily lessons.
