Fruit Flies Be Gone!

It’s peach season, apple season, fresh produce coming out of your ears season – and fruit fly season! What to do?

I ran across a quick tip online and thought I would share it. It works pretty well, too.

All these fruit flies get to be a pain in the...!

1. Fill a small bowl with some apple cider vinegar. Add a drop of dish soap & swirl around. The dish soap coats their wings so they have a hard time flying back out.
2. Cover it with plastic wrap, secure with a rubber band. (Yes, I own a roll of plastic wrap. It has been sitting in my drawer for years.)
3. Poke holes in it with, say, the end of a paper clip. Make the holes just a bit bigger that you would imagine a fruit fly to be.

That’s it. Now you just wait. Someone suggested that apple juice would work as well. I haven’t tried that. I did try regular vinegar when I was out of apple cider vinegar, but that did not work at all.

They will find their way into the bowl but not out of it. Some are clever enough to escape, but most get stuck & die. Hope this works for you!

*UPDATE*

@Biegenzahn just pointed out to me on Twitter that she uses a jar with a metal lid. Just punch holes in the lid! Much greener way to achieve freedom from fruit flies! Thanks Nicole.

  1. Great idea! I’ll have to try it next time. I use a plastic jug, like an old milk or orange juice one, put some apple cider vinegar inside, and a small piece of fruit (beer works great too). Then I roll a piece of paper and place it inside the spout, making sure there is only a tiny hole still open to the inside, then tape it. It catches them and they can’t figure out how to fly out the hole they got in.

    1. Those are good suggestions too!
