The Power of Healing Within Ourselves

Today I’d like to introduce Cathryn Johnson, guest posting on the power of healing within our minds and positive attitudes.

I agree completely that healing is not just a physical process, it is a mind-body connection that needs to work in concert. I know that is what has worked best for me. I’ve had problems with my lower back since 1997 when I ruptured a disc. I rehabbed it through exercise and physical therapy, but it took a long time. My husband always had a can-do upbeat attitude, even when I would grimace with every movement in pain. I learned from him that it makes all the difference and it has carried me well through many situations.

Great Thinkers – Healing Attitude

It is said that “a merry heart, doeth good like a medicine.” Proverbs 17:22. And this is quite true. Positive thinking and a cheerful disposition are the first step in the road to recovery. A friend recently told me about a couple that she had heard about who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. They quit their jobs and decided to travel the world on the adventure of a lifetime. And when they returned, the cancer was gone. Their bodies had healed themselves.

Now some reading this may question the initial diagnosis, but even medical studies have shown that positive thinking can have an effect on recovery. The “Placebo Effect,” is commonly known and recognized and shows that patients when given sugar pills instead of medicine begin to feel better just because they think they are being treated. Our mind is a powerful thing.

And this belief is nothing new. It is not “New Age” or weird. In fact, it is a belief that has been held and passed on through the ages.

I have compiled a list of ten quotes from great thinkers throughout history to challenge, motivate and inspire us to have a positive attitude when fighting sickness:

The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.

Voltaire (1694-1778) – a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher famous for his wit and for his advocacy of civil liberties, including freedom of religion and free trade

The wish for healing has ever been the half of health.

Seneca the Younger (c. 3 BC – 65 AD) – a Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and in one work humorist, of the Silver Age of Latin literature

Since the human body tends to move in the direction of its expectations–plus or minus—it is important to know that attitudes of confidence and determination are no less a part of the treatment program than medical and science technology.

Norman Cousins (1915 – 1990) – an American political journalist, author, professor, and world peace advocate

Every patient carries her or his own doctor inside.

Albert Schweitzer (1875 – 1965) – a Franco-German (Alsatian) theologian, organist, philosopher, and physician

Be sober and temperate, and you will be healthy.

Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) – Founding Fathers of the United States, he was also a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat

Pleasant words are a honeycomb sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Bible, Proverbs 16:24

Some patients, though conscious that their condition is perilous, recover their health simply through their contentment with the goodness of the physician.

Hippocrates (ca. 460 BC – ca. 370 BC) – an ancient Greek physician of the Age of Pericles, and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine

Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.

Buddha (c. 563 BC to 483 BC) – a spiritual teacher from ancient India who founded Buddhism

The first step in natural healing is responsibility. Natural healing is about taking control of your life and being responsible for everything that goes in and out of your body, mind and spirit.

Richard Schulze N.D., M.H. – one of the foremost authorities on natural healing and herbal therapy

Cheerfulness is the best promoter of health, and is as friendly to the mind as to the body.

Joseph Addison (1672 – 1719) – an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician

Health is not a condition of matter, but of mind.
Mary Baker Eddy (1821 – 1910) – the founder of the Christian Science religion
