Organic Chocolate Syrup & Organic Toaster Pops

I have a very skinny 5 year old boy. I can see all of his ribs. His pediatrician says we need to work on getting weight on him, so – I try.

He does like chocolate milk, but have you seen some of the chemicals in chocolate syrups out there?

“High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Cocoa (Adds a Negligible Amount of Fat)2% or Less of: Potassium Sorbate (a Preservative)Salt, Mono- and Diglycerides (Adds a Negligible Amount of Fat)Polysorbate 60 (an Emulsifier) Xanthan Gum, and Vanillin (an Artificial Flavoring)” are the ingredients on Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup.

Whenever I read the ingredients on the back of pre-made chocolate milk bottles, most of them make me so upset. Why do they have to put so much utter $#!* in them??!!

No thanks! I looked at my regular grocery store but didn’t find anything organic. Back to Whole Foods.

I found two products on their shelf, one which was organic chocolate flavored syrup. I want syrup flavored by the real deal.

So I grabbed this. Ah!laska Chocolate syrup. It was $5.39 for 22 ounces. I know, it sounds steep for chocolate syrup. The lack of chemicals, preservatives and additives make it worth it to me. This product is described on their website as:  dairy-free, gluten-free, sodium-free and peanut free, making it a favorite for people both with and without food sensitivities who want a delicious chocolate treat.

First off, I recommend putting the organic milk in the glass first, then adding the syrup. It is thick and sticky. It takes alot of stirring to get it mixed in with the milk. I have to put it in a container with  a lid and shake it up hard. I understand the reason for it, there is no chemical or emulsifier to make it mix easily. I’m OK with all that mixing. I make it in larger batches and keep it in a sealed container in the fridge for convenience. Then it gets a nice chilled, chocolate-y creaminess to it. My skinny little boy loves it! My little girl likes it too. She has grown tired of chocolate milk (they serve the pre-made nasty stuff I  was bitching about earlier) and she just didn’t like it anymore.  But she likes this! The flavor is a touch less sweet than the other chocolate syrups you have used, because it has no high fructose corn syrup. Your kids might notice it at first if you switch them cold turkey, but they get used to it fast – it’s chocolate milk, after all. GREEN LIGHT for Ah!laska Organic Chocolate Syrup!

Next is Nature’s Path USDA Organic Frosted Toaster pastries. I started buying these over a year ago. Available for $3.49 at my regular grocery store, which is a plus. I cannot always hoof it over to Whole Foods. To be honest, I never bought or fed my children Pop Tarts.  They were just too fake and unhealthy looking even when I wasn’t being as conscious of a mom. So my kids don’t have too much of a comparison. To them, I am buying Pop Tarts, even though we grab it aisles away from the real Pop Tarts, and even though I tell them, it isn’t those Pop Tarts. So they love them, especially the brown sugar maple cinnamon and chocolate flavor. I know they have other flavors but these are my kids’ favorite. I like them too. Also, my kids eat them as snacks, not as breakfast.   Big GREEN LIGHT!

Please remember I am unpaid and unsolicited to try and review these products.
